Review

For years, the story of a shy, introverted mole who dared not come out of his dark, dank hole had been tucked away in Tereza Sediva's desk drawer, until British publisher Thames & Hudson finally discovered it. Opening horizontally, this quirky picture book divides the world into two separate places: the subterranean lair of the little mammal on the bottom pages is rendered primarily in black and white, while the above-ground universe on the top pages shines with radiant brilliance and dazzling colors and shapes. Mole's only friend, a "bright pink nightlight" (read: radish) tries to persuade him of the beauty of the world, but it's only when the pink nightlight disappears and the warm rays of the sun shine through the hole that Mole summons all his courage. The Czech illustrator's playful linocut illustrations, with overlapping layers, present this fable about curiosity, courage, and the importance of color in life to readers of all ages.
