He studied journalism at the University of Chile and later received a doctorate in Letters from the University of La Sorbonne-Nouvelle, France. Has worked in the newspaper The Mercury, in the United Nations (Central America and Bolivia) and in non-governmental organizations related to childhood and the protection of nature.
